You Are Not the Problem
You read that right.
You are not the problem.
Maybe you’ve tried tracking your food, following meal plans, cutting out sugar, or starting another workout routine. You begin with good intentions, but eventually life gets busy, the plan becomes exhausting, and you find yourself starting over.
It’s easy to interpret that struggle as a personal failure.
But many of the messages, expectations, and environments surrounding you make taking care of yourself harder than it needs to be.
Think about what you’re up against.
A Food Environment Built Around Convenience and Overconsumption
Food is available everywhere, all the time. Many of the easiest options are highly appealing foods you can eat quickly, with very little preparation or thought.
When you’re grabbing bites between meetings, eating in the car, or snacking while scrolling, it can be difficult to notice fullness and satisfaction before you’ve eaten more than you intended.
These foods are convenient, accessible, and often much easier to reach for than a balanced meal, especially when you’re already hungry and exhausted.
Meanwhile, you’re told that struggling with your choices means you lack self-control.
You end up blaming yourself without considering how much your surroundings, schedule, and hunger influence those decisions.
A Culture That Treats Exhaustion as Normal
Skip breakfast. Work through your break. Grab another coffee. Stay up late. Put everyone else first.
Then somehow find the energy to cook, exercise, and take care of yourself.
We’ve normalized a pace of life that leaves very little room for our basic needs. Rest becomes something you have to earn. Meals get squeezed between responsibilities. Exercise gets pushed to tomorrow.
And when you finally have a moment to yourself, you’re often too depleted to do any of the things you planned.
You care about your health. But caring doesn’t magically create more time, energy, or mental space.
Still, you’re left feeling like you should be able to do it all.
An Expectation That Symptom Relief Is the Whole Solution
Got a headache? Grab Tylenol. Stomach upset? Pop some Tums. Can’t sleep? Try melatonin. Dealing with food noise? You’re told a GLP-1 is the answer.
We’re constantly offered something to take, but how often are we given support to understand what’s contributing to how we feel?
Medication can be helpful and sometimes necessary. But the conversation can stop at symptom relief, leaving nutrition, sleep, hydration, movement, and stress largely unexplored.
When feeling tired, uncomfortable, or depleted becomes normal, it’s easy to accept it as simply part of getting older or having a busy life.
You may find yourself managing how you feel day after day without a clearer understanding of what’s going on.
A Diet Culture That Rewards Fast Results Over Lasting Health
Eat less. Follow strict rules. Push harder. Lose the weight as quickly as possible.
The promise is appealing, especially when you’ve been uncomfortable in your body for a long time. You want something to work, and you want to see progress.
But what happens when the plan leaves you hungry, exhausted, preoccupied with food, and unable to maintain it?
What happens when a restaurant meal feels like a failure? When missing a workout makes you want to abandon the week? When enjoying your favorite food comes with guilt?
You blame yourself, even though the approach never accounted for your needs or your actual life in the first place.
The weight may come off for a while, but maintaining the routine becomes harder and harder. Eventually, you’re back at the beginning, wondering why you couldn’t make it stick.
Every attempt can leave you less confident in your ability to change.
An Endless Stream of Conflicting Advice
One person says to fast until noon. Another says to eat a protein-heavy breakfast. Someone says carbs are the problem. Another says saturated fat is.
Then you’re told you need another supplement, fancy health gadget, or complicated routine.
Before long, even deciding what to eat feels overwhelming.
You second-guess meals you used to enjoy. You wonder whether your workout counts. You keep searching for the missing piece that will finally make everything click.
Each new piece of advice adds another decision, another rule, or another reason to question what you’re doing.
You can’t even think about improving your health habits without feeling like you’re already behind.
The Overwhelm Adds Up
All of this creates a lot of noise in your mind and a lot of demands on your body.
You’re trying to make thoughtful choices while rushed, tired, hungry, stressed, and unsure which advice to trust.
It makes sense that consistency feels so hard.
You may begin the week with good intentions, then miss a workout or make a food choice you hadn’t planned. Suddenly, the familiar thoughts return:
“I already messed up.”
“I don’t have time.”
“I’ll start again Monday.”
“This treat will make me feel better.”
One difficult moment turns into several days of abandoning the plan, followed by another attempt to start over.
And the longer that cycle continues, the easier it becomes to believe that you’re the problem.
